ABUAD Launches Advanced School on Stroke Control in Africa

The Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD) Advanced School on Stroke Neurochemistry and Cerebrovascular Resilience, in collaboration with the International Society for Neurochemistry (ISN), has initiated a call for enhanced scientific, clinical, and policy action to combat stroke in Africa. This initiative was launched during the opening ceremony of the ISN–ABUAD Advanced School, themed “Stroke Neurochemistry and Neurovascular Resilience,” scheduled from August 3 to 11, 2026.

The program, supported by a competitive educational grant from ISN, was facilitated by Dr Edem E. Edem, the Director of the ISN–ABUAD Advanced School 2026.

It aims to train 30 early-career neuroscientists through advanced training, mentorship, and practical laboratory exposure. Prof. Smaranda Olarinde, Vice Chancellor of ABUAD, highlighted the urgent need for innovative research and collaboration to address stroke, a leading cause of death and disability.

Keynote speaker Prof. Rufus Akinyemi stressed the importance of early detection and management of cardiovascular risk factors to mitigate the rising stroke burden in Africa.
