Professor Advocates Biological Solutions for Nigeria's Environment

Ahmed AbdulHameed, a professor of Ecology at Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University (ATBU) in Bauchi, delivered the university's 48th inaugural lecture at the 1,000-seat lecture theatre on the Yelwa Campus. He advocated for the adoption of biological solutions to address Nigeria's environmental challenges, emphasizing that ecology is a practical discipline that offers solutions for restoring ecosystems, ensuring food security, and promoting sustainable development.

AbdulHameed identified key drivers of climate change and ecosystem degradation, including population growth, industrialization, urbanization, and excessive use of fertilizers and pesticides. He noted that these unchecked human activities have pushed the planet beyond its natural recovery capacity.

He discussed the unintended ecological consequences of agricultural practices and stressed that sustainable agriculture relies on healthy ecosystems. AbdulHameed recapped his over three-decade academic journey, highlighting contributions to agroforestry, environmental monitoring, and sustainable agriculture, while advocating for ecological solutions to the current environmental crisis.
