ACAMB Urges Nigerians to Combat Banking Fraud Risks

The Association of Corporate Communication and Marketing Professionals in Banks (ACAMB) has issued a warning to Nigerians about the rising threat of banking fraud, particularly phishing scams. ACAMB President Jide Sipe noted that criminals are becoming increasingly adept at impersonating reputable banking institutions through fake messages, cloned websites, and fraudulent social media accounts.
This warning follows an investigation by FactCheckAfrica into a fraudulent text message that directed users to a cloned banking site aimed at stealing sensitive information such as login credentials and Bank Verification Numbers (BVNs). Sipe emphasized the importance of customer vigilance, stating that while Nigerian banks and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) are enhancing fraud detection measures, these efforts alone are insufficient.
ACAMB outlined six precautions for users of digital banking services to help safeguard their accounts. This advisory comes in light of recent security incidents, including Wema Bank (NGX: WEMABANK)'s suspension of activities on X due to over 70 fake accounts impersonating the bank.
