Nigeria's Public Financial Management System Plagued by Corruption and Lack of Accountability

The Nigerian public financial management system is plagued by corruption and lack of accountability, as ministries, departments, and agencies continue to engage in activities contrary to transparency rules. Recent budget disclosures, including the 2026 budget, have raised serious concerns about fund mismanagement and inefficiencies within the federal government. Seun Onigbinde, the CEO of Budgit, a nonprofit organization focused on improving budget transparency, has criticized the government for its failure to properly prioritize critical obligations and address unrealistic assumptions in budgeting.

The Auditor General for the Federation revealed that many government agencies have failed to account for significant sums of money, with no one being held accountable for financial infractions. Reports have also shown non-compliance with revenue remittance requirements, further highlighting the lack of financial discipline and transparency. The situation is exacerbated by loopholes in the Fiscal Responsibility Act, allowing for massive corruption and fund mismanagement without adequate sanctions.
