ADC Must Secure INEC Approval Before Convention – Olurode

Prof. Lai Olurode, a former commissioner of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), warned the African Democratic Congress (ADC) that it must secure INEC's approval before proceeding with its convention.

Speaking to Punch Online on Thursday, Olurode highlighted the legal and political implications of moving forward without explicit endorsement from the electoral body. He noted that holding a convention without INEC's presence could undermine the legitimacy of the party, which has already faced derecognition by INEC.

Olurode emphasized that political parties must adhere to regulatory frameworks to avoid being labeled as unlawful organizations. He pointed out that ADC leaders have previously held significant government positions and are capable of resolving internal disputes quickly to maintain the party's public image.

Olurode also urged the government to ensure open political competition and warned against overreacting to opposition parties, stressing the importance of credible democratic processes.
