ADC Advocates Power-Sharing Model for 2027 Elections

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) is promoting a power-sharing model to avert potential rifts among opposition politicians as Nigeria approaches the 2027 presidential elections. Lukman Salihu, a member of the ADC's reform team, explained in an interview that the party's goal is to move away from the winner-takes-all system and instead introduce a collegiate system for sharing power among leaders, including presidential candidates.

This initiative aims to ensure that leadership is collective rather than controlled by individuals, fostering teamwork and shared responsibilities. Salihu emphasized the importance of avoiding a situation where a winner behaves like an emperor.

The ADC's proposal comes amid rising tensions within the opposition, which includes figures like Peter Obi, Atiku Abubakar, Rabiu Kwankwaso, and Rotimi Amaechi, who are pushing differing interests. The ADC has already developed a governance plan with a 50-member committee to approve its manifesto, focusing on addressing Nigeria's challenges and ensuring the emergence of the best candidates through a clear screening process.
