Urgent Action Needed as Nigeria Faces Severe Food Crisis

A global report on food crises indicates that ten countries, including Nigeria, are experiencing severe acute food insecurity, with conflict as the primary driver. António Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, emphasizes the urgent need for global leaders to take action to scale investments in lifesaving aid and end conflicts causing suffering.

In Nigeria, particularly in the Northeast regions of Adamawa, Borno, and Yobe, millions require humanitarian assistance, with 50% of children needing food, water, sanitation, and health services. The report reveals that 63.8% of households struggle to access nutritious food due to financial constraints, while 60.5% report insufficient food.

The FAO and WFP warn that millions of Nigerians are at risk of hunger as food prices soar. UNICEF calls for immediate attention to prevent a repeat of the 2011 famine in the Horn of Africa, highlighting the dire situation of malnutrition among children and mothers in Nigeria.
