Nigeria Among Top 10 Countries in Global Food Crisis

A recent UN report highlights Nigeria as one of the top 10 countries facing the worst global food crisis, with conflict being a primary driver of acute food insecurity. The report, released on a Friday, indicates that 266 million people across 47 countries are experiencing high levels of acute food insecurity, with Nigeria contributing significantly to this statistic.

The report emphasizes that the situation is no longer temporary but increasingly entrenched, with conflict-affected countries accounting for two-thirds of those facing severe hunger. By 2025, it is projected that nearly a quarter of the population will experience acute food insecurity.

The report warns that humanitarian aid alone is insufficient to address the crisis, which is compounded by ongoing conflicts, climate shocks, and economic instability. The outlook for 2026 remains bleak, with rising food prices and supply chain strains expected to exacerbate the situation.

The report calls for urgent action to scale investments in life-saving aid and to address the root causes of conflict.
