Deji Adeyanju Urges Emergency on Fake Drugs in Nigeria

Human rights lawyer Deji Adeyanju has urged President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency regarding the proliferation of fake drugs and substandard products in Nigeria. In a statement issued in Abuja, Adeyanju warned that Nigerians face daily exposure to potentially dangerous medicines and consumer goods.

He called for the removal of Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director-General of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC), along with the heads of other regulatory agencies, including the Standards Organisation of Nigeria (SON), citing their failure to protect consumers. Adeyanju emphasized the urgent need for government intervention and a comprehensive review of the regulatory system, highlighting the dangers posed by counterfeit products sold in unsafe conditions.

He stated that the current regulatory framework is inadequate and called for competent leadership to restore effective regulation and enforcement, insisting that the issue should be treated as a national emergency.
