African Nations Meet in Abuja for Climate-Peace Forum

From May 5 to 7, 2026, representatives from several African nations convened in Abuja, Nigeria, for a strategic forum aimed at integrating climate change adaptation with peacebuilding efforts in conflict-affected regions. The forum, organized by the Department of Climate Change, highlighted the need for countries like Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad, Liberia, Somalia, and South Sudan to strengthen their responses to climate risks in fragile environments.

Iniobong Abiola, Director of the Department of Climate Change, emphasized Nigeria's commitment to embedding peacebuilding within its climate agenda. The forum served as a platform for peer learning, enabling countries to share experiences and develop practical approaches to managing climate threats and reducing tensions.

Ann Hammil from the International Institute for Sustainable Development noted the importance of incorporating peacebuilding into climate strategies, particularly in national adaptation plans. The event aimed to promote open dialogue and leverage broader peacebuilding outcomes, supported by a global network of 1,000 adaptation practitioners across 84 countries.
