Diezani Allison-Madueke Acquitted of Bribery Charges

Diezani Allison-Madueke, who served as Nigeria's Minister of Petroleum Resources from 2010 to 2015 and was the first female president of the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), was acquitted by the Southwark Crown Court in London of five counts of accepting bribes from oil executives. Alongside her, Doye Agama and Olatimbo Ayinde were also cleared of bribery allegations.

The verdict represents a setback for the UK’s National Crime Agency, which investigated her for 13 years. The defense argued that crucial documents proving her innocence were missing, suggesting a conspiracy by Nigerian government agents.

Following her departure from office in 2015, Diezani and her associates faced severe reputational damage due to former President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption campaign, which led to unfounded allegations of corruption against them. The Nigerian government is now called upon to offer restitution and ensure that successors in the oil and gas sector are cleared of similar allegations.
