Ruto Visits Dangote Refinery, Plans New Lamu Facility

On September 25, 2026, Kenyan President William Ruto visited the Dangote Petroleum Refinery located in Lekki, Lagos, at the invitation of Dangote Group President and Chief Executive Officer. This visit precedes the groundbreaking ceremony for a new Dangote refinery in Lamu, Kenya, scheduled for September 30, 2026.

Ruto stated that the Lamu project is anticipated to create approximately 60,000 jobs and improve fuel reliability and security in Kenya. The Dangote refinery in Lagos has a crude refining capacity of 700,000 barrels per day and produces over 100 million litres of petrol, diesel, and aviation fuel daily, making it Africa's largest single-train crude oil refinery.

The Lamu refinery is expected to have a similar capacity and will be developed within the Lamu Port-South Sudan-Ethiopia Transport (LAPSSET) corridor. Ruto emphasized the potential for new businesses related to petroleum processing, including industries linked to fertiliser production and chemicals, once the facility is operational.
