AGRA Reports 36.3 Million Nigerians in Food Crisis

In August, at least 36.3 million Nigerians were living in crisis-level food insecurity or worse, according to the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA). This figure, unchanged from July, represents 16.65% of the population assessed.

Nigeria recorded the highest number of people in IPC/CH Phase 3 or worse among 17 African countries monitored. Contributing factors to food insecurity included conflict, displacement, high food prices, and weather-related disruptions.

The national average price of maize rose by 5.2% month-on-month to N355.29 per kilogramme, marking a 9.3% increase from three months prior. Millet's price increased by 2.1% to N474.88 per kilogramme, while white sorghum saw a 6.6% rise to N439.10 per kilogramme.

Conversely, milled rice prices fell by 6.9% to N616.94 per kilogramme due to improved supply. The report underscores the ongoing challenges faced by Nigerian households regarding food prices and supply.
