Tinubu Honors Aguiyi-Ironsi's Legacy in Abia State

On Wednesday, during a ceremony in Umuahia, Abia State, President Bola Tinubu paid tribute to Major General Johnson Aguiyi-Ironsi, Nigeria's first military Head of State, marking the 60th anniversary of his death. Represented by Minister of Defence Christopher Musa, Tinubu highlighted Aguiyi-Ironsi's leadership during a critical time of political uncertainty and national tension in Nigeria.

He praised Aguiyi-Ironsi for prioritizing national interest over personal gain and for his commitment to preserving national unity, restoring stability, and maintaining the integrity of the Nigerian state, despite his brief tenure. Tinubu remarked that without Aguiyi-Ironsi's contributions, Nigeria might not exist as it does today.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, who attended the event, referred to January 15 as one of Nigeria's darkest days and urged citizens to learn from past challenges. Abia State Governor Alex Otti noted Aguiyi-Ironsi's age at the time of his death, 42, and acknowledged the context of his early leadership mistakes.
