AI-Driven Fake News Threatens Nigeria's National Security

GMI Nation, represented by coordinator Samaila Musa, issued a warning regarding the threats posed by AI-driven fake news and deepfakes to Nigeria's national security. The group highlighted that the increasing sophistication of technology allows for the creation of convincing fake videos and forged official documents, which can incite panic, violence, and distrust among citizens.

Musa noted that Nigeria is already grappling with issues such as insurgency, banditry, and communal conflict, and cannot afford the additional burden of misinformation. He emphasized that manipulated videos and audio recordings are often circulated in local languages to mislead citizens and provoke violence.

The group called for law enforcement agencies to strengthen the enforcement of existing cybercrime laws and urged social media platforms to improve monitoring systems to swiftly remove harmful content. Musa warned that disinformation is increasingly being weaponized to exploit Nigeria's ethnic and religious diversity, potentially triggering reprisals and deepening existing divisions.
