Akwa Ibom Shuts 341 Illegal Schools, Invests N35bn in Education

The Akwa Ibom State government has taken significant steps to improve educational standards by shutting down 341 illegal schools, comprising 326 schools closed in 2025 and 15 more in September 2026. This initiative is part of a broader commitment to education as a driver of socio-economic development.

During a Ministerial Briefing at Akpan Isrmin Hall, Uyo, the government announced an investment of N35 billion aimed at upgrading infrastructure and enhancing teachers' welfare. Prof. Ubong Umoh, the Commissioner for Education, and Hon. Anietie Etuk, Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), clarified that the state's free education policy covers tuition and additional costs like examination fees.

They warned against charging tuition in public schools and urged the public to report any violations. The government has intensified efforts against illegal schools, particularly those operating in unsuitable environments.

Additionally, the education budget has increased from about N17 billion to over N35 billion, reflecting the administration's commitment to the sector.
