Wike Denies Threat to Journalist Okinbaloye Amid Controversy

Olayinka Wike, in a media chat, refuted claims that he intended to shoot journalist Seun Okinbaloye, asserting that his comments were made in a hyperbolic context. Wike accused Okinbaloye of abandoning neutrality and taking sides in political matters, particularly as Nigeria approaches the 2027 elections.

Okinbaloye expressed concerns regarding the political landscape and the viability of opposition parties. Wike's remarks were criticized by human rights groups and civil society organizations, who condemned the statement as a threat.

During a subsequent phone conversation, Okinbaloye clarified that he understood Wike's comments were exaggerated and not meant to be taken literally. Wike emphasized that his statements were intended to highlight the challenges within the opposition parties and the need for a competitive political environment.

Chamberlain Uzor, head of Channel Television's Abuja office, noted that Wike's comments were misrepresented and taken out of context.
