Air Fares Surge 20.8% in Nigeria; Kano Leads Costs

According to a report by the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), air fares in Nigeria have increased by 20.8%, with the average fare for a single route journey rising to ₦157,552 in May 2026 from ₦130,361 in May 2025. Kano State recorded the highest average fare at ₦184,139, followed closely by Lagos State at ₦176,971.

In contrast, Gombe State had the lowest average fare at ₦135,800. The report also indicated that the average fare for commuting within cities saw a slight increase of 2.43%, rising from ₦1,397 in April 2026 to ₦1,431 in May 2026.

Year-on-year, this fare represents a significant increase of 38.63% compared to ₦1,032 in May 2025. The analysis further detailed various transport modes, including motorcycle and water transport, highlighting regional fare differences across Nigeria.
