Average City Bus Fare in Nigeria Rises to N1,431

In May 2026, the average fare for intra-city bus journeys in Nigeria increased by 2.43% to N1,431, according to the National Bureau of Statistics' latest transport fare watch report released on Tuesday. This rise follows an average fare of N1,397.27 recorded in April 2026 and represents a year-on-year increase of 38.63% from N1,032.46 in May 2025.

The report indicates that transport costs have risen across major categories, including intercity bus travel, domestic air transport, motorcycle (okada) rides, and water transport. Specifically, intercity bus fares rose by 0.96% to N9,699.55 in May, with a significant year-on-year increase of 21.89%.

Motorcycle transport recorded the highest annual fare increase, with an average fare rise of 3.56% from April. Water transport fares also increased by 2.41%.

The report highlights wide disparities in transport fares across states, with Ondo State recording the highest average intercity bus fare at N11,080, while Zamfara State had the highest average intra-city bus fare at N1,878.80.
