Nigerian Airline Operators Demand Tax Cut to Lower Airfare Prices

Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) spokesperson, Obiora Okonkwo, states that domestic ticket prices in Nigeria will remain high unless the government implements a 25% cut in aviation taxes as mandated by ECOWAS. The high costs, including excess levies and new aviation oversight taxes, have led to airfares soaring to as much as N500,000 per flight.

ECOWAS aims to reduce air travel costs across West Africa by abolishing or reducing certain charges, monitoring implementation, and promoting a competitive aviation market. Nigerian carriers are struggling with rising operational costs and excessive charges, hindering passenger access to affordable air travel.
