Nigerian Government Engages Airlines Over Soaring Airfares, High Taxes

The Nigerian government, through Minister Festus Keyamo, is in discussions with airlines to tackle the surge in airfares, particularly before the upcoming festive period. The spike in ticket costs, reaching up to N400,000 on domestic routes, is linked to the significant taxes imposed on airlines by the government.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reports that airlines globally pay substantial charges to governments, affecting ticket prices. Industry experts highlight that 70% of the ticket cost in Nigeria is due to taxes.

The Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has emphasized its non-regulation stance on airfares, advocating for a liberalized market.
