Aisha Muhammed Reflects on Father's Legacy 50 Years After Assassination

Aisha Muhammed, daughter of former Nigerian Head of State, Murtala Ramat Muhammed, spoke about her father's leadership style and enduring legacy on the 50th anniversary of his assassination. She described her father as a leader who embodied simplicity and accountability, deeply committed to fighting corruption.

Murtala Muhammed, who was assassinated in July 1976, led a bloodless coup that ousted General Yakubu Gowon. During his tenure, he implemented sweeping reforms, dismissed corrupt officials, and initiated plans for Nigeria's transition to civilian rule, including the relocation of the capital from Lagos to Abuja.

Aisha Muhammed emphasized her father's aversion to the trappings of power, such as motorcades and heavy security details, opting instead to live like an ordinary Nigerian. She reflected on the pain of his loss and questioned why his assassination was made easy despite security measures.
