Journalist Alleges Denial of Fair Hearing in Akwa Ibom

Ibanga Isin, an investigative journalist in Akwa Ibom State, has expressed alarm over an alleged denial of fair hearing in his court case against herders who reportedly destroyed his farm, causing damages worth millions of Naira. The case involves the suspect Abdullahi Yusuf, who was arrested and later accused of stabbing a police officer during an escape attempt.

Isin has faced repeated invasions of his farm, leading him to seek justice through the police and the courts. Despite his efforts, he claims that the police prosecutor, Bless Essien, has been uncooperative, failing to provide timely updates on the case status and hearing dates.

The Nigerian Union of Journalists condemned the actions taken against Isin, describing them as an assault on the principles of open justice and press freedom. Isin has called upon the Chief Judge, Ekaett Fabian Obot, and Governor Umo Eno to ensure enforcement of the Akwa Ibom State Anti-Open Grazing Law to protect farmers.
