Police Corporal and Conductor Sentenced to Death for Kidnapping

On July 5, 2015, a police corporal, Mbazigw Chinedu Fridai, and bus conductor, Isaac Eddi Ndeesor, were involved in the kidnapping of a victim along Urua Akpan Udosen Ikot Unah Road, Ukanafun, Akwa Ibom State. They, along with four armed men, forcibly abducted the victim while he was returning from church with his wife and family member, demanding a ransom of N50 million.

The victim's family was threatened with death, leading them to pay a reduced ransom of N200,000. The victim was later released near Bori River.

Following an investigation, Fridai admitted to his role in the kidnapping and identified his accomplices. The Akwa Ibom State High Court, presided over by Justice Nsemek Daniel, sentenced Fridai to death by hanging for conspiracy to kidnap and unlawful possession of firearms, while Ndeesor received a five-year prison sentence for conspiracy and a seven-year sentence for unlawful possession of firearms.

The trial, which began in 2016, concluded in 2026.
