Kidnapper Sentenced to Life for Abducting Judge in Akwa Ibom

Nkereuwem Felix Effiong, aged 30, was sentenced to life imprisonment by the Uyo Federal High Court in Akwa Ibom State for kidnapping Hon. Justice Joi Unwana.

The abduction occurred on December 18, 2023, alongside his driver, Idorenyin Ekanem, who was later killed during the incident. Effiong was charged with conspiracy, membership in a terrorist group, and kidnapping under the Terrorism Prevention Prohibition Act of 2022.

He was found guilty on multiple counts, including a life sentence for kidnapping, 25 years for conspiracy, and 20 years for membership in a terrorist group. Effiong admitted to participating in three kidnapping operations, including the abduction of Justice Unwana, and disclosed that the gang received a ransom of N25 million for the judge's release.

He was arrested on July 4, 2024, following investigations by the State Security Service. The court proceedings were conducted with legal representation provided by the Legal Aid Council of Nigeria.
