Algeria Claims Historic Bronze at WAFCON 2026

Algeria secured a historic bronze medal at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) by defeating host nation Morocco 3-2 in a penalty shootout following a 1-1 draw in regulation time. The match took place last night, marking Algeria's first podium finish in the tournament's history.

Morocco started strong, with Kautar Azraf scoring in the 26th minute after Ibtissam Jraidi hit the crossbar earlier. Despite Morocco's dominance, they missed opportunities to extend their lead, including a disallowed goal by Maryam Atiq.

Algeria equalized in the 83rd minute through Lina Boussaha, assisted by Melissa Bethi. In a dramatic finish, Morocco's Nouhaila Benzina missed a late penalty in stoppage time, leading to a shootout where Algerian goalkeeper Chloé N’Gazi saved two penalties.

Algeria missed two of their own but secured victory when Ines Belloumou scored, and Jraidi hit the crossbar on Morocco's final attempt. Both teams have qualified for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil.
