Seven Workers Killed in Uttarakhand Tunnel Landslide

A tragic incident occurred late Thursday in Uttarakhand, India, where a landslide resulted in the deaths of at least seven workers and injuries to 13 others at a tunnel construction site for a state-run hydropower project managed by the Tehri Hydro Development Corporation. The State Disaster Management Authority reported that 19 workers were rescued, while three remain missing.

The rescue efforts involved local authorities using head-mounted torches and makeshift rafts to navigate the flooded tunnel section. The region has been experiencing heavy monsoon rains, contributing to the disaster.

Accidents at large construction sites are frequent in India, and ecologists have raised concerns that excessive development in the fragile Himalayan areas is leading to more such incidents. This follows a previous incident in Sikkim, where 20 workers were killed in a similar tunnel accident last month.

Since the onset of the monsoon season in June, hundreds have died in floods and landslides across the country, with experts attributing the increasing frequency and severity of these disasters to climate change and poorly planned development.
