Aston Villa's European Cup Winner Jimmy Rimmer Dies at 78

Jimmy Rimmer, the former goalkeeper for Aston Villa, has passed away at the age of 78. He was a key member of the club's historic 1982 European Cup-winning side.

Rimmer began his senior career at Manchester United, where he was part of the squad that won the European Cup in 1968, although he did not play in the final against Benfica. After a stint at Arsenal, he joined Aston Villa, becoming their first-choice goalkeeper.

Rimmer played a significant role in Villa's successful 1980–81 First Division title campaign and their European Cup run the following season. In the 1982 final held in Rotterdam, Villa triumphed over Bayern Munich 1–0, with Rimmer starting the match but leaving due to injury after just nine minutes.

Despite his early exit, he was recognized as part of the winning team and received his second winners’ medal. Over his career, Rimmer made 229 league appearances for Aston Villa and earned one senior cap for England.
