Alibaba Offers $1.5M Grants to African Startups

Alibaba, via its philanthropic initiative led by Jack Ma, is launching a $1.5 million grant program aimed at supporting African entrepreneurs in developing innovative solutions to address pressing challenges on the continent. This initiative coincides with the 8th edition of Africa's Business Hero, themed "Defining Africa's Future Today," which seeks to empower entrepreneurs across sectors such as climate, smart agriculture, digital finance, healthcare, logistics, manufacturing, and emerging technologies.

The program aims to provide mentorship and elevate the visibility of Africa-led businesses, which are seen as pivotal in driving economic transformation. Zahra Boateng, Managing Director for Africa, emphasized the importance of equipping founders with strategic support to scale and sustain their businesses, thereby creating jobs and fueling inclusive growth.

The application process is open to African citizens who have registered businesses for at least three years, with an expected annual influx of 30,000 applications. The initiative will also expand its recognition pool to include the top 100 finalists from ten African markets, including Namibia, Tunisia, and Zambia.
