Allegations Against Nigerian Embassy in Mali Over Trafficking

Allegations have surfaced against officials of the Nigerian Embassy in Mali concerning their handling of human trafficking cases. Tolulop Akand-Sadip, chairperson of the House Committee on Humanitarian Services, criticized the embassy for a lack of transparency in repatriation efforts and alleged collaboration with individuals exploiting vulnerable Nigerians.

During a high-level technical meeting, Akand-Sadip advocated for a survivor-centered approach that goes beyond mere repatriation, emphasizing the importance of comprehensive rehabilitation and reintegration programs to prevent re-trafficking. She highlighted the ongoing humanitarian challenge posed by human trafficking in Nigeria, particularly affecting women and children.

Akand-Sadip called for stronger institutional collaboration, improved data management, and sustainable livelihood programs to support survivors. The meeting also addressed the need for legislative and policy reforms to enhance the humanitarian response system and ensure adequate budgetary support for agencies protecting vulnerable Nigerians.

Allegations of misconduct surrounding Nigerian diplomats in Mali were also discussed, following a fact-finding mission that reported increased trafficking of underage Nigerian girls.
