Sheikh Sani Moves to DSS Custody Amid Coup Allegations

Sheikh Sani, a cleric associated with the Tijanniyya sect, has been transferred to the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) after a ruling by the Federal High Court in Abuja. Justice Peter Lifu ordered the production of Sheikh Sani for a bail application hearing scheduled for February 18.

His counsel, Mohammed Sheriff, indicated that the hearing will resume on Wednesday. Sheikh Sani is embroiled in allegations related to a coup plot, and a court staff member confirmed his current detention status.

Additionally, Sheikh Sani has filed a fundamental rights enforcement suit against the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), the Attorney General of the Federation, the Ministry of Justice, and Jaiz Bank PLC, seeking his release. Reports suggest that a $2 million gift was wired to a bank account linked to Sheikh Sani, which has raised concerns regarding his detention.

The judge noted that the application from December 11, 2025, is kept safe in custody without access to family or associates due to security reasons.
