AltBank Initiates Autism Care Reforms in Nigeria

AltBank is spearheading systemic reforms for autism care in Nigeria by hosting its inaugural autism stakeholder roundtable, which aims to foster policy dialogue among diverse coalitions, including government representatives and healthcare practitioners. Kored Demola Adeniyi, Executive Director of the Commercial Institute Bank, set the tone for the event, emphasizing the importance of dialogue over mere celebration.

The roundtable highlighted the urgent need for early diagnosis and intervention, with Patrick Dotun Akand advocating for a paradigm shift towards a comprehensive national autism framework. He stressed the necessity of universal development screening at 9, 18, and 24 months and the creation of a national autism registry to ensure equitable access to interventions.

Dr. Im Okon delivered a goodwill message on behalf of the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria, affirming their commitment to advancing inclusive outcomes.

The event featured discussions on barriers to autism care and the need for sustainable financing and partnerships, with key insights to be compiled into a comprehensive policy brief for relevant government ministries.
