Experts Push for Autism Inclusion and Stigma Reduction

Experts led by Mr. Shirlei Okharedia, director of Temple School and owner of Greenwood House School Parkview Ikoyi, are advocating for the inclusion of children with autism in mainstream education and the elimination of societal stigma.

The event, themed "Spread the Blanket, Everyone Belongs," took place in Ikeja, Lagos State, and aimed to promote awareness and understanding of autism. Mr.

Okharedia emphasized the need for society to embrace the uniqueness of children with special needs and to create supportive environments. Damilola Adedeji, a parent psychotherapist, highlighted the financial and emotional challenges faced by families raising children on the autism spectrum, noting the lack of structured support systems.

She called for increased awareness and government intervention, including grants to alleviate financial burdens. According to a study published in December 2014, approximately 600,000 children in Nigeria live with autism, reflecting a global trend where 1 in 125 to 150 children are affected.
