Flight Diverted After Passenger Attacks Fellow Traveler

An American Airlines flight traveling from Dallas-Fort Worth to Newark was diverted to Baltimore on Thursday night after a passenger allegedly became violent and attacked another traveler. The incident occurred approximately two hours into the flight, causing chaos and prompting the crew to intervene.

Witnesses, including retired law enforcement officer Juan Mejia, reported that the atmosphere shifted dramatically when the passenger began assaulting the man seated next to him, reportedly placing his hands around the victim's neck. Mejia and another passenger, Richard Olenick, intervened and helped restrain the assailant.

The flight crew provided restraints, including zip ties and duct tape, to secure the aggressive passenger to his seat for the remainder of the flight. The diversion to Baltimore was necessary due to concerns that the passenger could become aggressive again.

Witnesses also noted that prior to the physical confrontation, the passenger had verbally abused a flight attendant, allegedly using a racial slur.
