Amnesty International Calls for Probe into Rivers Gas Leak

Amnesty International has called on the Nigerian government to urgently investigate a methane gas leak in Rivers State, which poses a serious threat to the health and lives of residents. The leak was first noticed in October 2025, with unusual bubbling in a mangrove swamp near Bill Community, accompanied by a strong sulfur smell.

Reports indicate that the leak has already contaminated drinking water, affecting children and causing illness in local schools. Isa Sanusi, the Nigeria Country Director for Amnesty International, expressed deep concern over the situation, warning that it could worsen if the government does not act quickly.

The leak is suspected to be near oil and gas installations, including pipelines and wells previously operated by Shell, which divested its onshore operations in Nigeria in 2025. Despite alarming air quality test results showing methane levels 10,000 times higher than normal, the government has yet to take concrete steps to address the situation.

Chief Bennett Okpoki, chairman of the Bill Community council, emphasized the urgent need for action to safeguard residents' lives.
