Amnesty International Urges Nigeria to Protect Critics' Rights

Amnesty International has called on Nigerian security agencies to end their crackdown on critics of the U.S. and Israel. The organization reported that at least two individuals in Kaduna were detained under what it described as sham trials based on bogus charges.

In a statement released on Friday, Amnesty International criticized the growing authoritarian practices of Nigerian authorities, which it claims undermine human rights and create a toxic climate of fear for those who criticize government policies. The organization highlighted that the right to freedom of expression is protected under the Nigerian Constitution of 1999 and international human rights treaties, including the African Charter on Human and Peoples' Rights.

Amnesty International urged Nigerian authorities to halt the increasing repression and attacks on individuals who peacefully exercise their rights, warning that targeting critics sends a chilling message that dissent is not tolerated in Nigeria.
