Amnesty International Criticizes Kano Government's Arrests

Amnesty International has raised alarms regarding the rising trend of arrests of critics of the Kano State government, as reported on their verified Facebook page. The Department of State Services (DSS) is reportedly at the forefront of this crackdown, detaining citizens for expressing dissenting views.

Notable cases include Abba Ibrahim Hussain, a law student at Northwest University, who was allegedly abducted by armed DSS operatives and remains in detention, risking missing ongoing examinations. Similarly, social media influencer Aminu Warkal was detained for five hours over allegations of cyberbullying against the governor.

Amnesty's report also mentions the summoning of critic Samir Hanga by the DSS for questioning due to his remarks about the governor. Abdulmajid Danbilki Kwamanda was arrested two weeks ago under pressure to withdraw his criticisms.

The organization condemns these actions as abuses of power, asserting that criticizing public officials is not a crime and urging Nigerian authorities to respect and protect freedom of expression.
