Senator Jiya Joins APC, Three Senate Seats Vacant

On Tuesday, Senator Peter Jiya defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), prompting Senate President Godswill Akpabio to declare three Senate seats vacant. The affected districts are Enugu North, Nasarawa North, and Rivers South East, with the vacancies arising due to the recent tragedies affecting the 10th Senate.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is expected to oversee the midterm elections to fill these vacant seats. This political shift alters the current configuration of the Senate, which now consists of 89 members from the APC, 9 from the African Democratic Congress (ADC), 4 from the PDP, and others, totaling 106 senators.

The upcoming elections will set the stage for fresh contests in these districts, impacting the political strategies of various parties as they prepare to fill the vacancies.
