Niger Senator Peter Jiya Defects from PDP to APC

Senator Peter Jiya, representing the Niger South Senatorial District, has officially defected from the People's Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC). His resignation was communicated through a letter read by Senate President Godswill Akpabio during the Senate's plenary session on Tuesday.

Jiya expressed gratitude to the PDP for the opportunity to serve the nation but indicated that his decision to leave was due to ongoing quarrels and significant divisions within the party. He emphasized the need to join the APC to continue his political career.

Jiya's defection marks a notable shift in the Senate's composition, with the APC now holding 90 seats, the African Democratic Congress (ADC) with nine, the PDP with four, and the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) with one, while three Senate seats remain vacant due to the demise of their former occupants.
