Anthropic CEO Calls for AI Development Slowdown

Dario Amodei, the Chief Executive Officer of Anthropic, has called for a deceleration in the development of artificial intelligence models, expressing concerns that the rapid advancements in AI technology may outpace humanity's capacity to understand and control it. In an essay titled "We Must Pace the Frontier," published on his website on Saturday, Amodei noted that while AI has the potential to greatly benefit humanity, it also poses significant risks, including cyberattacks, bioterrorism, and severe economic disruption.

He pointed out that AI development has accelerated drastically in recent months, with some systems capable of recursive self-improvement. Amodei warned that if left unchecked, AI systems could evolve faster than society's ability to manage them.

He also raised alarms about the potential for networks of autonomous AI agents to take control of significant portions of the internet within six to twelve months, which could result in damages amounting to hundreds of billions of dollars.
