Anyone Earning Legitimately Must Pay Tax – Lagos Govt Replies Tiktoker Peller

The Lagos State Government has responded to a TikTok content creator, Peller, who revealed that the Lagos State Internal Revenue Service (LIRS) sent a demand notice for income tax. Peller, a 20-year-old singer, argued that he gained fame last year and questioned the large sum requested.

In a live session, Peller expressed confusion over the tax demand. In response, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Tax Revenue, Abdulkabir Ogungbo, stated that anyone earning income legitimately in the state is expected to pay tax as per the law.

Ogungbo clarified that LIRS is an independent body responsible for assessing tax matters and making judgments on behalf of the government. He emphasized that the new tax reform also covers digital assets and virtual transactions, including online content creation.

The adviser stressed that taxation is based on residence, and individuals benefiting from Lagos infrastructure and services are expected to pay their due taxes to the state government.
