APC Demands Obi Quit 2027 Race Over $123.77m Anambra Debt

Peter Obi, the New Democratic Congress presidential candidate, should exit the 2027 race, according to the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign Council. This call follows official disclosures by the Anambra State Government concerning unpaid external debt originating from Obi's governorship.

Dele Alake, spokesman for the APC's campaign wing, points to records showing that during his eight years leading the southeastern state, Obi secured $123.77 million through external borrowing. The party contends these figures directly undermine Obi's longstanding assertions regarding fiscal prudence throughout his tenure.

Obi has constructed his political identity around assertions of exceptional monetary stewardship and debt-free administration in Anambra. According to Alake's Monday statement, for the last four years Obi and his political allies have portrayed his governorship as exemplifying careful financial management and an absence of debt when departing office.

Additionally, the APC emphasizes that during his eight-year governorship, Obi's administration disbursed roughly $4.05 billion—approximately 5.4 trillion naira—while leaving unpaid compensation for state workers as a continuing problem. Obi allegedly made an earlier declaration that he would withdraw from the presidential contest should proof surface indicating he left behind liabilities upon leaving office.

The APC campaign group is now insisting Obi fulfill that pledge, citing the newly released financial data from Anambra State authorities. The party has not specified when this prior declaration was made or provided full context regarding how Obi himself had described his spending patterns.

Governor Charles Soludo's administration released the figures documenting external obligations incurred during Obi's time in office, which form the foundation of the APC's present demand.
