APC Set to Control 30 States as Fintiri Prepares to Defect

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is poised to consolidate its control over 30 of Nigeria's 36 states following indications that Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri is set to defect from the People's Democratic Party (PDP). Fintiri's anticipated move is particularly significant as Adamawa is the home state of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, a major contender in the 2027 presidential race.

This alignment with the APC is expected to weaken Atiku's political base ahead of the next general elections. The APC's strategy includes a formal reception for Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, scheduled for Monday, which is seen as pivotal for the party's expansion.

Additionally, River State Governor Siminalayi Fubara is expected to formally join the APC, reinforcing the party's hold in the South-South region. Fintiri's formal defection may not occur until April, coinciding with President Bola Tinubu's scheduled visit to Yola.

APC National Chairman Prof. Nentaw Yilwatda has attributed the party's growing dominance to tangible governance outcomes, including improved security and infrastructure projects.
