APC Faces Internal Strife Ahead of 2027 Elections

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is experiencing internal discontent as consensus politics raises concerns about candidate selection for the 2027 general elections. The party's ability to manage fallout from this process is crucial for its success.

Opposition parties, including the Labour Party and the New Nigeria Peoples Party, are attempting to unseat President Bola Tinubu, with recent defections weakening their collective strength. Notably, Peter Obi and Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso have defected to the Nigeria Democratic Congress, while Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed announced his defection to the People's Democratic Party.

The APC's consensus method for candidate selection has faced criticism, particularly from aspirants in Ogun, Nasarawa, Gombe, and Oyo states. For instance, Gombe State's Senator Muhammad Danjuma Goje rejected a purported consensus arrangement, emphasizing the need for written consent from all aspirants.
