Heatwave in Maiduguri Raises Kidney Disease Risks

In Maiduguri, Borno State, a severe heatwave is contributing to an increase in kidney disease cases, as temperatures frequently exceed 40°C. Dr.

Mustapha Lawan from the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital warns that extreme heat can lead to dehydration, which negatively affects kidney function. Individuals with pre-existing kidney issues are particularly vulnerable during hot weather, as dehydration can worsen their conditions and increase the risk of complications.

Kidney diseases can arise from various causes, including infections and hypertension, and symptoms may not be apparent in the early stages. However, warning signs such as increased urination at night, pain, difficulty urinating, blood in urine, and swelling in the face or legs should prompt immediate medical attention.

Dr. Lawan advises preventive measures during hot seasons, including avoiding prolonged sun exposure and ensuring adequate hydration, especially for those working outdoors.

The extreme heat poses a serious threat to the health and daily lives of residents in Maiduguri.
