Retired Nigerian Generals Targeted by Insecurity and Kidnappings

Retired military officers in Nigeria are increasingly targeted by insecurity, with several high-profile incidents of abduction and murder. Major General Rabe Abubakar, a former director of defense information, had his wife kidnapped on May 30, 2026, in Katsina.

Brigadier General Maharazu Tsiga was abducted in Bakori, Katsina State, alongside nine residents, with reports suggesting a ransom of N60 million was demanded. Major General Idri Alkali was tragically killed in 2018 during an attack while traveling, and Air Chief Marshal Alex Badeh was assassinated in December 2018.

Major General Richard Duru has been missing since September 2023 after being abducted in Owerri, with his family reportedly paying a ransom of $50,000. Major General Hassan Ahm was killed in July 2021 during an attack on his vehicle.

These incidents highlight the severe security challenges faced by retired military personnel in Nigeria.
