Lithium Mining Transforms Nasarawa State Amid Concerns

Lithium mining is reshaping life in Nasarawa State, particularly in Nasarawa Toto, where a lithium processing plant, reportedly the largest in Nigeria, is being constructed by Chinese firm Avatar New Energy Material Co. Ltd.

This facility is expected to have a production capacity of 4,000 metric tons daily. Another Chinese firm, Canmax Technology, has pledged $200 million to build an additional lithium processing plant in the state.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has commended these investments, highlighting Nigeria's vast market and low labor costs. However, civil society organization Africa CAPPA has raised concerns about the lack of environmental safeguards and the potential for ecological degradation, warning that Nigeria risks repeating past mistakes in the mining sector.

They emphasize the need for community involvement in decision-making processes, as the current system often sidelines local communities. Reports of environmental issues, including dust affecting crops and wastewater contamination, have also emerged, raising alarms among local residents.
