Tinubu Pushes for State Police to Tackle Security Issues

President Bola Tinubu has reaffirmed his commitment to establishing state police in Nigeria as part of efforts to confront the country's worsening security challenges. In a recent meeting held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja with state governors and senior officials from the National Assembly, Tinubu pledged to initiate constitutional amendments to create a legal framework for state police.

He argued that a decentralized police system would enhance grassroots security and enable states to respond swiftly to local challenges, including terrorism and banditry. Tinubu highlighted the failures of the current centralized police system and the need for state police to restore public confidence in national security.

However, concerns were raised regarding potential abuse of power by state governors. Kayode Egbetokun, the current Inspector General of Police, has opposed the creation of state police, citing the need for proper funding and management of the existing police force.

In contrast, Tunji Disu, the newly appointed Inspector General, supports the initiative and has inaugurated a seven-member committee led by Professor Olu Ogunsakin to propose an operational framework for state police.
