Pate Orders Resumption of Striking Hospital Workers

On May 14, 2026, Muhammad Ali Pate, the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, ordered striking workers at the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital in Akwa Ibom State to suspend their industrial action and resume duties. This directive followed a controversial operation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) that caused panic among staff and patients.

The EFCC reportedly admitted to a mistake during the operation, which had led to harassment of healthcare personnel and disruption of medical services. The incident drew criticism from various medical unions, including the Nigerian Medical Association and the Nigerian Bar Association, who described the EFCC's actions as invasive and detrimental to patient safety.

In response, Pate announced the formation of a ministerial committee to investigate the incident and provide recommendations to prevent future occurrences. The committee is expected to submit its report within two weeks.
