IBAN Urges Tinubu to Intervene in NBC Licensing Issues

The Independent Broadcast Association of Nigeria (IBAN), led by Chairman Sir Godfrey Ohuabunwa, has condemned the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) for violating due process in the management of Nigeria's digital switch-over (DSO) project. The association expressed concern over the slow progress in transitioning from analogue to digital broadcasting, which has been discussed since 2008.

They highlighted the need for the NBC to protect local manufacturers and adhere to federal policies that prioritize locally made products. The association specifically criticized the NBC's alleged plans to import hybrid set-top boxes from China, which they argue undermines local investments.

They have appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for urgent intervention to halt any new licenses or permits related to set-top box imports until the conclusion of a pending court case. The association warned against actions that could contravene existing court orders and emphasized the importance of collaboration and adherence to legal guidelines for the success of the DSO program in Nigeria.
